Airflow Sensors & HFMs
The airflow meter or HFM is the sensor that detects the temperature and volume of the air entering the engine. Other sensors in the intake also provide vital temperature and pressure data. The engine computer uses this data to determine how much fuel and spark to use in the engine through a series of complex data tables. With a faulty airflow sensor the computer relies on a backup set of fuel tables, usually using more fuel than necessary to safeguard the engine. The airflow sensor or HFM (Hot Film Meter) is hugely important in the performance and fuel economy of the engine. Faulty airflow sensors usually cause rough running, poor idle, lack of performance, misfires, and higher fuel consumption. There may also be fault codes and check engine lights for air:fuel mixture, lean conditions, rich conditions, misfires, and others. We also use different mass air sensors for upgrades on various models, such as Euro HFM upgrades and Porsche HFM upgrades. Use our SEARCH BY MODEL feature to filter these items for your BMW.
