M56 Idle Control Valve - E46 325i M56 SULEV

The M56 engine's idle control valve regulates airflow during idle (when the throttle position is nearly closed). A faulty idle control valve (ICV) will cause a rough idle, hunting RPM, and rough running. Sometimes they can be cleaned and they're good for another few thousand miles. Otherwise, complete replacement is the only option. 

The M56 engine was the "SULEV" engine, SULEV standing an acronym for Super Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle. The 325i SULEV and 325Ci SULEV models were offered to states with California low emissions standards in model years 2004, 2005 and (for 325Ci coupes) 2006. This idle control valve module is intended just for these M56 engine versions.

The states that originally offered the M56 325 SULEV models include CA, NY, MA, and others -- but the cars themselves could be anywhere in the USA by now. SO be sure to check your engine carefully before buying a SULEV or non-SULEV part.
