This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 13417838024 (13-41-7-838-024) and is described as "Idle Control Device" for the E9X M3, 2008-2013. This is an electronic actuator that operates an idle control valve, as found on the S65 V8 engine. This includes all E90 M3 sedan, E92 M3 coupe and E93 M3 convertible models for the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 model years, all equipped with the S65 naturally aspirated V8 engine.
This valve regulates the idle speed on the S65 V8 engine. When it fails, it can have your engine running rough at idle, surging, erratic RPM fluctuations, and can cause check engine fault codes as well as put your E90/E92 M3 into limp mode. If your idle control valve has failed and is showing these symptoms, a new idle control valve should have your S65 V8 idling smooth, once again, with no fluctuations.
