If an idle control valve / idle regulating valve becomes stuck with oil or carbon, you can have very annoying running problems or even stalling. The idle control valve (ICV) is an extra throttle body that alters how much air is entered into the intake manifold. 

A malfunctioning ICV will therefore let too much or not enough air in. Rough running, erratic idle, sputtering, and stalling are all symptoms of a bad ICV (there could be other reasons for those too, of course). Cleaning an ICV sometimes does not solve the issues and a new unit is required. This is the OEM Bosch T-shaped ICV.

This "T" shaped idle control valve fits various 6 and 8 cylinder BMW engines. You'll find it on S54 powered BMWs like the E46 M3 and S54 Z3/Z4 M models (through as late as 2008), the S62 V8 found in the E39 M5 (2000-2003), The BMW Z8 roadster (2000-2003), and the first generation M60 V8 engine, found in E34 530i & 540i (1994-1995), the E31 840Ci, the E39 540i (1997-1998 only), and the E38 740i & 740il (1995-1998 only). 

Please note this ICV is NOT for 540/740 V8 models after the 1998 model year. If your 540i or 740i/740iL is after the 1998 model year, this is not the ICV for you.
