In most states, the license plate lamp has to function and light up your rear license plate. Not having a working license plate light can result in a traffic stop or a ticket. On these classic E30 3 series, E12/E28 5 series, E24 6 series and E23 7 series models, it's quite common for the license plate light assembly to get wet, flooded with water, corrode, and just plain fall apart internally. Fortunately the OEM replacement plate lamp isn't that expensive and it's fairly simply to replace.
