This power distribution block sits on top of the the battery on some E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series (2006-2013), E82/E88 1 Series (2008-2013), and first generation E84 BMW X1 (2013-2015). These cars have what's known as a "fusible link" on the positive battery cable, which has an explosive discconect device designed to activate during a crash, detected vehicle impact, or when the air bags are deployed. The fusible link cuts power to all systems in the car as a safety mechanism after the crash. It's also common for the fuse in this battery distribution block to also blow when this occurs. Once the fuse has blown, this distribution block must be replaced in order to repair the vehicle. 

Sometimes either the fusible link or distribution box fuse will fail on its own - without a crash or air bags deploying. This can cause your car to not get power and be inoperable.
