Modern BMWs have what's known as a "fusable link" in the main positive battery cable as part of it's safety battery cable system. In the event of an accident or an airbag deployment, the positive cable to the battery "pops", cancelling all power from the battery to help decrease the chance of spark or fire in an accident. This means if the fuseable link has been activated (blown), you must replace this battery cable to restore power to the vehicle. In some cases this fused cable may even fail, and set itself off randomly, leaving your car completely without power.
