Bilstein HD shocks are direct replacements for the original 2002 front shock, but with slightly firmer valving for more control over body and suspension motions. Bilstein uses modern Digressive Valving on their 2002 HD shocks so the faster speed impacts are set for softness (bumps and bad pavement) while slower shock speeds are stiffer (larger dips and cornering). The ride feels more controlled -- but not stiff! The shock essentially self-adjusts to be softer to soak up bad pavement.
