Bump stops are a crucial part in the strut assembly. It's there to prevent damage to the strut internals if the suspension ever bottoms out. Instead of solid metal-on-metal contact this foam bushing provides a cushion. In certain cases the suspension is designed to bottom out and the bump stop factors into the suspension spring rate. New bump stops should be installed with every new shock.
