Headlight Level Sensor, Aftermarket - E90/E91/E92/E92 xDrive, E70 X5, E71 X6, E84 X1

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 37146853754 (37-14-6-853-754) and is described as a Front Headlight Level Sensor, for controlling the vertical aiming position on several BMW chassis with Xenon headlights. Only 1 required per vehicle (but there is also a rear sensor). It's located on the front suspension control arm.

This list of BMWs that use this sensor include all E9X 3 series xDrive (AWD) which is the era spanning from 2006-2013, the first generation BMW X1 (E84 chassis, 2014-2016), the E70 X5 (2007-2013), and E71 X6 (2008-2014). 

If this sensor fails, it will leave your headlights not adjust correctly -- something that will impair both your visibility as well as potentially dazzle your oncoming traffic. It can also lead to errors and warning messages about your headlights. Fortunately replacing this sensor is a pretty straight forward task, and a fresh sensor can have your BMW auto-aiming correctly again.
