Power Steering Fluid Reservoir With Cap And Integrated Filter for E39 M5, E60 M5, and E63 M6.
Why replace this reservoir? There is a filter inside that is not removable. To service the filter requires replacing the reservoir. Also the connections on the bottom of this fluid tank are highly prone to leaks. It's not uncommon for the power steering connections to be over-tightened and can cause leaks. If you are trying to solve power steering leaks (which are highly common) then changing this power steering reservoir will be one of your priorities. If you've recently replaced your PS pump or rack that is even more reason to install a fresh reservoir with all new, clean, power steering fluid.
The power steering system is filled with either ATF or hydraulic oil (CHF) and it is vital that you use the correct fluid as the two cannot be mixed. The cap on your fluid reservoir will indicate which fluid to use. If you have a green label on the reservoir cap you must use CHF. The two fluids are not miscible and will not mix.
