This bushing mounts the trailing arm to the outer wheel carrier. This is one of the few serviceable bushings in the rear suspension (the rest require complete replacement of the suspension arm). The trailing arm is designed to be the weak link in the rear suspension so if you're replacing the trailing arm due to damage, also consider replacing the bushings as well.
The inner bushing is often replaced when the rubber degrades over time or from rough pavement. The bushing can no longer dampen suspension movement and you end up with a steering vibration, imprecise steering feel, and sloppy handling.

Buying a Genuine part will usually be more expensive than an OEM or aftermarket brand but you are assured that it meets BMW's designs for fitment, performance, and longevity.
