Often referred to as the "Diving Board" front bumper, the earlier E30 models had the federal 5mph mandated aluminum bumper, which ran on E30 sedan/coupe models thru model years 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987, and 1988 models thru 5/1988 production date.
It is also used on the E30 convertible models for model years 1988, 1989, and 1990 (the Convertible finally swapped to the later plastic style bumper in 1991, on cars produced 10/1990 and newer).
This bumper is made of aluminum, and aluminum does oxidize (rust) over time, causing it to blister, degrade, and get outright ugly looking. While it's often mistaken for a chrome / steel part, it's not chrome plated. It's a large chunk of aluminum. This means small blemishes, scratches, haze, etc can usually be polished out. But large blisters, bubbles, fissures, and deep oxidization/rust may require a full replacement to fully cure the structural and aesthetic blues of your classic E30 3 series.
This aluminum bumper span is a brand new Genuine BMW piece, while supply lasts from Germany. We anticipate the supply to dry up, the price to surge, and eventually not be available - so if you are doing a restoration, now is the time to act!
