Regular or Activated Carbon filter? Regular filters are made of paper or textiles that are then electrically charged. The charged filter creates a static surface for foreign particles to cling to. Carbon filters - also known as charcoal filters - also use a textile material but with extra layers of chemically-treated carbon material (literally charcoal or charred wood). The carbon does a better job of trapping and containing foreign particles which makes it a better choice for heavily polluted areas and especially in stop/go traffic. It also does a better job of filtering odors than a standard paper filter. Because of the more complex manufacturing process, activated charcoal filters tend to be more expensive.
