BMW M TwinPower 0W40 carries a LL-01 approval and is ACEA A3/B4 rated. This is the new BMW-approved oil recommended for turbocharged M engines that require extra protection at elevated temperatures. This oil is better suited for M turbo engines than the 0W30 "Fuel Efficient" oil used in non-M cars.
The BimmerWorld view: When S55 and S63 engines were the "new" turbo M engines, we were intrigued at BMW adding this oil option for them. Was this to solve oil issues and these engines needing their own oil? It sounded promising that BMW would spec a new oil specific for turbo M engines -- but that was short lived, and even BMW decided this wasn't the way to go, dropping this 0w40 from the factory oil line. That's fine with us, as we're not huge fans of 0W oils unless ultimate fuel efficiency or reduced cold-start friction is desired. Since the debut of the S55 and S63 powered cars, we have preferred a heavier weight 5W30 or 5W40 oil with high ZDDP levels that provide superior protection than the latest "fuel efficient" oil formulas. It seems BMW also feels this way, which just helps justify our conclusion -- use a slightly heavier Red Line 5w30 synthetic for better bearing protection and operation in higher ambient temperatures.
