This is a universal piece of hardware with hundreds of various usage on virtually all BMWs, as early as E30 through current product chassis.
An early use for this hex nut with washer was the M20 6 cylinder valve cover, which uses eight of these to secure the the aluminum valve cover to the head. But they're also used for door locks, dipstick tube mounts, N20/N55 stock airboxes and charge pipes, ground straps, brackets and mounts, body mounted accessories, and so much more.
