If you are doing work on your E46 sedan or Touring wagon left front door (drivers side, on US / LHD cars), such as replacing a front left window regulator or working on your door locking / latching mechanism, you want want to replace the foam sound insulation for that door with a fresh piece. 

This is the original BMW replacement front left door foam sound deadening pad for the 1999-2005 3 Series 4-door (sedan and wagon). It's purpose is to cut down on vibration and sound through the large surface of the driver's side (left) door, help reduce cabin volume, as well as insulate the cabin from outdoor heat/cold. It's a pre-formed panel that installs just behind the interior door panel itself, conforming to both the sedan/wagon door panel as well as the door itself.

This foam insulation was used on the front left door of all E46 3 series four door models, as offered in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. This includes 323i, 325i, 325iT, 325xi, 325xiT, 328i, 330i, and 330xi (all in model years 1999-2005).
