There's a number of reasons for BMW X5 tailgate malfunctions and the spindle drive is one of the top causes for a open or close failure.
The X5 rear hatch strut includes the main spindle drive gear mechanism that lifts and lowers the hatch as well as supports it when open. If your X5 hatch no longer opens or closes, makes grinding or other odd noises the spindle drive could be one culprit.
