This is the rear ABS/DSC sensor used on the E90, E92, E93 335i, 335is, and M3 as well as the E82 135i and 1M models. It's also known as a wheel speed sensor. The rear left and right sensors are the same.
The ABS and DSC control unit relies on information from the sensors to set braking and traction control settings. A sensor going bad or failed will set the system into a dangerous failsafe setting and possibly a limp mode.
