The CV joint boot is a simple protective cover for a very expensive system on your car: the axles or half-shafts. These boots are there to protect the inner constant-velocity (CV) joint on the inner or outer end of the axle shaft, retain grease for the rack, and prevent outside debris from entering the joint. A ripped boot (sometimes called a gaiter) can spell bad news if left un-repaired. If caught soon enough the joint may be saved and avoid a much larger repair bill.
