OEM replacement flywheel for F8X M2/M3/M4 with DCT transmission.
The flywheel in a DCT transmission is very similar in design and operation as one in a manual transmission. In theory, the computer controls of the DCT should ensure longer flywheel and clutch life but the flywheel is still subject to the same types of failures as on traditional dual mass flywheels (DMF). Tuning upgrades, shift settings, additional heat, and neglecting to reset DCT clutch points can cause unexpected wear and tear on the dampening springs and friction rings inside the flywheel. If the clutches are badly worn, jerky shifts, or the DCT has trouble with clutch engagement you may also need a new flywheel.
There are symptoms of BMW DMF failure and needs to be replaced: build-up of clutch material or damage to the clutch contact surfaces (a DCT flywheel has two friction surfaces), excessive play between the two halves of the DMF (if the outer flywheel section can rotate more than 20mm in either direction), and grease leaking out from inside the flywheel assembly. A worn DMF does not just impact performance or clutch operation, it's a big safety issue as well. A DMF that breaks apart can be catastrophic to the transmission as well as dangerous to the driver and passenger.
BMW calls for the 6 mounting bolts to be replaced at the same time. See link below (BMW part #11227520706).
