This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 24357532668 (24 35 7 532 668) and is described as the neutral safety switch (gear position switch) for 5-speed automatic transmission for some E46, E39, E83 X3, E53 X5 3.0, and Z3 models.

This part fits the GM 5-speed automatic transmission - A5S360R and A5S390R. It does not fit models with the ZF 5-speed automatic. The GM transmission has a smooth metal oil pan with 20 screws. You can also confirm visually by the tag on the side of the transmission. We have identified production date splits that may help to guide you:

E46 323i up to 3/2000 production
E46 325i/330i from 3/2003 production
E39 525i/530i up to 3/2001 production
