This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 7119951461 (07 11 9 951 461) and is described as Genuine BMW Woodruff Key, as used on E30 M3 (Euro), and E34 M5 3.6 liter (US & Euro). This small metal half moon shaped "key" is used to locate the crankshaft timing gear. It measures 4 x 6.5 mm.
This is used on a few other applications including very early M30 (2.5CS, 3.0CS, 3.0CSL, some BMW Motorcycle applications and the Euro E26 M1 - amongst others.
