This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11311742175 and is described as Sliding Piece, as used on the M62 V8 found in E38 740i & 740iL, E39 540i, and E31 840Ci models. 

Only for cars of model years 1997 and 1998. After 1998 the engine designed changed, and this part is only for the pre-updated M62 engines.
