This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11311726480 (11 31 1 726 480) and is described as the left timing chain guide rail for M50, M52, M52TU, M54, S50US, and S52 engines. The guide rail directs the timing chain from the lower crank gear to the upper camshaft sprocket. Over time the rail surfaces wears away which leaves the chain with slack that can be noisy or even damage the chain.
