This timing chain kit for 2012-2016 BMW 228i/328i/428i/528i and Z4 28i RWD models builds on the kit of factory parts from BMW but includes additional parts requested by CRP's network of DIY installers and technicians. CRP provides a more comprehensive and complete solution than other timing chain kits on the market. Each kit contains over 30 pieces, providing a true “job in a box” overhaul package.

Rein/CRP offers two levels of N20 timing chain kits - Select and Select Plus. Both kits include all of the pieces related to timing chain replacement, including new rails, tensioners, gaskets, and hardware. As well as some related “while you're in there parts”. The Plus kit adds the lower chain for the oil pump and other related components. Removing the oil pan is required for the Plus kit.

About N20 Timing Chain Problems
The primary symptom of a timing chain problem is a whining noise while the engine is revved. Another telltale sign is excessive wear on the chain and the guides. You can have a peek at the chain and upper guide by removing the oil cap and looking through the oil fill hole on the valve cover. Bright spots or polishing on the chain links is a sign of wear.

Replacement of these requires the front timing covers, oil pan, and top valve cover to be removed. However, due to the depth of the job and intricacies with the timing systems (VANOS), only technicians with special tools should perform this work. While very complete there are additional items that can/should be replaced so additional parts may be required.

Manual Transmission note: the front crank hub had two versions, with laser anti-slip etching or with a separate anti-slip grip disc (washer). This kit includes a new grip disc but it can only be used with a non-etched crank hub. Do not mix a grip disc with a laser-etched hub!
