Timing Chain Tensioner, INA - E34, E39, E32, E38, E31, E53 M60/M62/M62TU

This is the Genuine BMW timing chain tensioner for the M60, M62, and M62TU engines in the E34 530i/540i, E39 540i, E32 740i, E38 740i, E31 840ci, and E53 X5 4.4i/4.6is. If your engine produces a rattle sound on startup that goes away within a minute this tensioner is a likely source. The tensioner relies on an internal spring when the engine is cold (and oil is not yet flowing) to set the tension on the timing chain. Once oil is circulating, oil pressure takes over the tension. A weak spring will cause chain rattle.

Do not confuse chain rattle/slap with any other more serious rattles, such as VANOS or timing chain guides. The timing chain tensioner mostly relies on oil pressure so it will reach proper tension quickly. Prolonged rattles from the front of the engine may indicate a problem somewhere else.

This is an OEM timing chain tensioner manufactured by INA/Ruville - the original supplier to BMW for this part, as well as many other timing components. As the OEM it meets all of BMW's original design, fitment, and performance requirements and is TUV approved.
