VANOS Adjuster Unit, BMW - E39 540i, E38 740i, E53 X5 4.4i M62TU

VANOS (or VAN0S) is BMW's variable valve timing system. The VANOS unit is basically a pump and solenoid that rotates the camshaft to make more torque at various RPM. Having a variable camshaft means the M62TU engine can make more torque in the mid-range while not sacrificing power in the upper RPM. Obviously any problem with the M62 VANOS unit will have a major effect on performance and drivability, including misfires, fault codes, rough running, sluggish performance, poor fuel mileage, and the dreaded "marbles in a can" rattle sound.

The M62TU VANOS is made up of three major systems: the adjuster units (1 on each intake cam), electric solenoid valve, and the oil supply and distribution system. VANOS failures and wear can occur either in the solenoid or the adjuster unit itself. Typically "VANOS jammed" fault codes can be traced to a failure in the solenoid. But loss of performance and the dreaded rattle sound is from the adjuster.
