Stock motor mounts are filled with a vibration-dampening fluid giving them a hydraulic like absorbency. Mounts go bad when the fluid leaks or evaporates from the engine mount, leaving a rubber block that is far too flexible and "squishy" to do a proper job of supporting the engine. Once the engine mount fails, it causes engine shaking, vibration, as well as unwanted driveline twisting. This twisting action will harm the rest of the drivetrain bushings (like transmission and differential mounts) as well as the metal motor mount arms that hold these in place. In some cases the engine can twist far enough to cause contact with other components.
