Throttle Position Switch, BMW - E46 M3, E39 M5, MZ3 S54, Z4M
Throttle Position Switch that is critical for S54 and S62 performance.
This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 13637840373 (13 63 7 840 383) and is described as the throttle position sensor on the S54 engine in E46 M3, MZ3, and Z4M. It's also used on the S62 engine in the E39 M5.
With individual throttle bodies, their position is absolutely critical for peak engine performance. The ECU relies on sensors to determine which fuel, ignition, and torque maps to use. If the ECU is not seeing good data, or the throttles are out of position, it will restrict performance. The ECU will not deliver full power if it doesn't see full throttle, right?
Each bank of cylinders has its own throttle position sensor, or throttle position switch (TPS). On the S54 inline-6 there is a sensor on cylinder #1 (bank 1) and cylinder #6 (bank 2). On the S62 V8 the sensors are located at the rear of each bank. These are a pretty common failure item, resulting in sluggish performance, loss of torque, and jerkiness in the throttle (especially during on/off action). There should also be a check engine light and fault code for throttle actuation. This is an OEM sensor, sold individually. Note: throttle adaptation and position will need to be reset after installing new sensors.
This is a Genuine BMW throttle position sensor with a two year warranty. Buying a Genuine part will usually be more expensive than an OEM or aftermarket brand but you are assured that it meets BMW's designs for fitment, performance, and longevity. It will also be the very latest design, incorporating any updates or revisions that an aftermarket brand typically will ignore.
