The main drive belt runs the power steering pump, water pump, and alternator. It's very important not to neglect your drive belts as a failure will leave you stranded. They're easy to inspect during normal maintenance such as an oil change or refilling your washer tank. If there are cracks running across the ribs, sections missing, the edges are frayed, or the threads are visible on the belt surface, the belt should be replaced immediately.

The mechanical tensioner works by using a spring that applies and maintains pressure on the belt. Once the spring gets old and tired, it will cause a loose belt. Loose belts are bad because they lead to insufficient alternator charging and poor cooling performance from the water pump. Eventually that loose belt will slip off the pulleys shred itself from aggressive wear.
