This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 13541711042 (13 54 1 711 042) and is described as the coolant inlet/outlet flange cover for throttle body heating on 1988+ E30 325i, E28 528e (1988 only), and E34 525i with the M20 engine. This is a simple cover that circulates hot coolant from the engine block to keep the throttle body and intake area from developing ice in cold climates. 

Not for cars before the 1988 model year. This part is specific to the later 1988 and newer models, which includes any M20 engine offered in model years 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 (as well as 325ic models in 1992 and 1993).
