Front struts/shocks on the E46, E82, E9X, E60, E63, E83 are mounted to the chassis with this front upper strut mount. It's a dense rubber mount that also incorporates a bearing that allows the strut to rotate as the steering changes. Over time the rubber breaks down and the bearing wears out and the entire mount should be replaced.

The 943 is most commonly associated with standard suspension while the 098 is most commonly linked to M Sport/Sport suspensions (although there are exceptions). Visually and geometry-wise they are identical. BMW originally used aluminum for the 943 housing while the 098 used steel. This Rein part replaces 31336760943 and has an aluminum housing. The alignment pin is cast into the housing.
