The Thrust Rod on your E31 8-Series or E32 7-Series incorporates a large, soft bushing that is designed to remove all vibration normally transmitted through the steering system while still doing a decent job at controlling loads from the tire. 

The soft, rubber bushing naturally wears prematurely, causing sloppy steering, poor tire wear, and jolting or instability during braking. The ball joint in the arm can also become worn and cause bad handling and wear, so we always recommend checking it along with the bushing and lower control arm (track rod) when diagnosing issues.
