We can't tell you how common it is to be missing this part, but it happens often. If you have an empty space in your factory trunk tool compartment that's shaped like this eyelet, now you know what it's for! BMW provided one of these tow hook eyes in case your BMW needs to be pulled. It threads into either the front or rear bumper receptacle and is indispensable in an emergency.
