The Genuine BMW radiator, part # 17115A7DEF2 (17 11 5 A 7D EF2) is an ideal replacement for your E46 M3, whether for a failed or failing radiator, or simply as a preventative cooling system overhaul. BMW used the same radiator for all models of the E46 M3, including the Euro M3 CSL, so while we have upgraded performance radiators, you know this stock radiator is up to the basic tasks for most street driven cars, or those seeing just the occasional track day or more aggressive driving styles.
Avoiding a blown radiator and overheating is one of the best ways to ensure long life for your S54 3.2 liter engine. We find a preventative approach is best on the E46 M3 cooling system. If one critical part fails (like your radiator) it will likely shorten the lifespan of the other related items, and the labor to change one or two critical cooling components is nearly the same to overhaul the entire cooling system.
Common failure on the stock E46 M3 radiator are punctures, often from road debris like rocks/pebbles, striking the radiator and creating a leak, or fracturing of the plastic inlet and or outlet (where the cooling hoses attach). The plastic end tanks can also crack and rupture, due to the heat cycling and the breakdown of the composite plastics used. The fins on the radiator core can also be packed in with fine dirt and dust, which given how fragile the cooling fins are, can't be thoroughly cleaned well enough. This can impact the cooling performance and lead to overheating on a 20+ year old radiator.
Fortunately replacement is straight forward like most BMWs, and installing a new radiator cures these issues.
