This actuator is what actually moves the Valvetronic system on N51 and N52 6-cylinder engines. The actuator uses an internal sensor to determine piston, crankshaft, and camshaft positions and then moves the camshafts and valves based on instructions from the engine computer. It's a hugely important piece of engine operation. A failure of the internal sensor or the motor itself will throw a check engine light and may even stop engine function altogether. There should be a fault code for Valvetronic operation. Other symptoms include a loud, rapid clicking from the valve cover, and hunting idle and throttle hesitations.
