Secondary Air Pump - E39 528i, 525i, 530i (1999-2003) - 11721433959

This part is listed by BMW as BMW part number 11721433959 (11 72 1 433 959) and is described as Secondary Air Pump for E39 528i (1999-2000), E39 525i (2001-2003) and E39 530i (2001-2003). 

Not for cars before 1999 or after 2003. This pump is used on all 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003 6 cylinder model BMW 5 series (which is the E39 chassis.) 

This electric air pump cycles fresh air into the exhaust manifold at start up for emissions reasons. When it fails (and it fails often on the E39 6 cylinder models) it will trigger an F5 or F6 fault code, make your check engine light come on, and you will fail a plug-in emissions test. While this is a common failure part on the M52TU and M54 powered 5 series, it's a pretty simple part to replace.
