Cable for data and 12v power. Best used with 1999+ models.
Device connector: Binder 712 screw-on with 7-pins
Vehicle connections: CAN+, CAN-, 9-15v power, Ground
The AiM SmartyCam datalogging cameras need ECU data from somewhere and this hardwired install is our preferred method. On modern cars with OBD-II electronics a lot of data is running through the factory ECU wiring or the plug-in diagnostic port in the dash. For most 1999+ BMWs this is the most valuable data*: RPM, speed, throttle position, water and oil temperatures, individual wheel speeds, brake switch, gear indicator, and more from just two wires.
This is best used with our CAN Tap Harness (see Related Items below). We built a near-PnP CAN data harness for specific BMW models that includes a pigtail harness that is perfect for AiM SmartyCam, lap timer, or data logging devices.
This harness uses a open-ended wire leads for you to splice or tap into existing wiring near the ECU or OBD port. Data is then transferred along the 2 meter data cable to your camera with a metal Binder 712 connector. No other cables should be required. The cable also includes power and ground leads to provide constant power to the camera.
* - not all functions may be available on BMW CAN sources. BMW decides which data is available through the CAN and it can vary from model-to-model. For more details on your BMW check out our AiM documentation at this link (https://www.bimmerworld.com/About-Us/BMW-Tech-Info#AiMdocs).
